FAQ
Frequently asked questions
At what stage is it most useful to talk to you?
Ideally before you commit to establishing a Japanese entity or making a large investment. At that point we can test market selection, customer profile, pricing and entry method, and separate what is worth investing in from what should not be decided yet. If you already operate in Japan, we can equally start from analyzing why growth has stalled and redesigning from there.
What will market validation actually tell us?
More than market size, we can confirm the possible customers, the competitors and alternatives, how purchases are decided, what price the market accepts, and the regulatory questions involved. The goal is a position from which you can decide whether to enter, which customer segment to start with, and what to validate next.
Would you ever recommend not entering Japan?
Yes. We do not treat entry as a foregone conclusion. Where market fit or return on investment is not sufficient, we will also propose narrowing the target customer, working through distributors or partners, starting with a small pilot, or revisiting the timing of entry.
How are you different from a market research or consulting firm?
We do not stop at a research report or a strategy proposal. We can build the Japanese website, product, copy, acquisition programme and sales process, up to testing the hypotheses from the research at real customer touchpoints and improving from there.
What does “optimizing for the Japanese market” include?
This does not simply cover translation but also how value is communicated, as well as, information architecture, UI/UX, pricing and plans, contract terms, sales materials and enquiry journeys. We preserve the brand value you built overseas while shaping it into something Japanese customers can understand, compare and decide to adopt.
How much involvement will you need from our team?
We ask for two key roles: someone who deeply understands your product and existing markets, and a decision-maker authorized to decide on major steps. Virtual Arts handles all research, design, production, and execution in Japan—aligning on progress through structured regular reviews.
Can you also handle incorporation, legal and tax matters?
Virtual Arts covers market validation, business design, localization, production and development, and marketing. Work requiring professional qualifications (company registration, legal judgements, tax and residency status, etc.) is carried out with specialists in Japan. We act as your single point of contact, organizing what support is needed and coordinating with those specialists.
What should we prepare before the first conversation?
It helps to share your current operating markets, a brief product overview, your objectives for Japan, target customers, ideal timeline, team structure, and estimated budget. None of this needs to be finalized, helping you organize what is still undecided is a great place to start.
